Rising Abductions Are Threatening Nigeria's Frontline Health Workers

A wave of school and highway abductions across Nigeria — including recent mass kidnappings of students and teachers, and attacks along routes through the South-East — is putting community health workers, facility staff, and the families they serve at risk. Frontline health workers and KeistraDev facilitators at the 2-day community health training in Umuka, Osumenyi, Anambra State
Field Report · April 2026

Strengthening Frontline Health Systems in Umuka Community

A 2-day capacity-strengthening programme for community-based health workers in Osumenyi, Nnewi South LGA, Anambra State.

On 29–30 April 2026, KeistraDev Consulting provided technical guidance for a 2-day capacity-strengthening training for community-based health workers in Umuka and adjoining communities of Osumenyi 2, Nnewi South LGA, Anambra State.

Delivered with the support of the PRISCILLA Foundation and in collaboration with the Anambra State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (ASPHCDA), the programme brought together frontline health workers across both public and private facilities — community health workers, nurses, and supervisors — to strengthen competencies in infection prevention and control, disease surveillance, referral systems, community engagement, health insurance awareness, and identification of vulnerable populations.

One of the most impactful aspects was the use of practical, competency-based learning. Through simulations, role plays, live demonstrations, and field exercises conducted directly within the community, participants applied their learning in real-world settings. This experiential approach significantly improved confidence, engagement, communication skills, and readiness to support households and vulnerable individuals at the community level.

The training also demonstrated the value of blended learning tailored to local realities — using simple language and contextual community scenarios to improve comprehension and participation. The strong involvement of both public and private sector health workers highlights growing opportunities for collaborative community-based healthcare delivery. Importantly, the initiative lays the foundation for a digitally enabled community health support system to sustain learning gains and improve real-time decision-making and coordination.

Beyond the immediate outcomes, the programme holds strong promise for improving access to quality primary healthcare — particularly for children, pregnant women, the elderly, and underserved populations — and represents a model for strengthening community–facility linkages across Anambra State.

"This is only the beginning. We look forward to scaling the initiative, deepening partnerships, and continuing to build resilient community health systems that leave no one behind."

Client Voices

Trusted by Health Leaders Across Nigeria

KeistraDev's assessment of our BHCPF utilisation gaps was the most actionable piece of technical assistance we received all year. They understand how the Nigerian system actually works.

AO
Dr. A. Okonkwo
Executive Director, State PHCDA – North-Central Nigeria

We engaged KeistraDev to develop our NHIA accreditation readiness plan. Within three months our facility had cleared the assessment — a process that had stalled for two years prior.

FM
Dr. F. Mohammed
Medical Director, Private Hospital Group – Abuja FCT

The MEL framework KeistraDev designed for our community nutrition programme was accepted by our donor on the first submission. Their knowledge of DHIS2 and donor reporting standards is excellent.
